letters and views Dear editor, As soon as I realized the bulk of your February issue was devoted to adenosine triphosphate (ATP) technology, I put aside what I was doing and spent the better part of an hour going through the magazine, cover to cover. I do not believe any JanSan publication has devoted so much coverage to this technology and placed such emphasis on science and hygienic cleaning, and I thank you. After nearly 30 years in the professional cleaning industry — first as a distributor, building service contractor, and then a man-ufacturer — I have seen a number of trends come and go in our industry, many of which have made valuable contributions. Thanks to green cleaning advocates, such as Stephen Ashkin, president of The Ashkin Group, as well as the leadership role of the International Sanitary Supply Association (ISSA), our industry has reduced its impact on the environment, helped protect the health of building occu-pants and is at the forefront of the environ-mental movement. Other industries look to ours for guidance on their own green journeys. However, it is my strong belief that scien-tifically qualifying cleaning effectiveness, using such technologies as ATP detection, will have more impact on our industry than any movement before it. We are now able to prove a surface is hygienically clean — greatly reducing the risk of microbes, germs and bacteria harm-ing human health. And this is demonstrat-ing our industryʼs value to our customers and the general public as never before. A comment made at the last Cleaning Industry Research Institute (CIRI) sympo-sium was that the cleaning industry should now be placed under the umbrella of the health care industry because with scientific, hygienic cleaning we do so much to keep people healthy. Whether or not you accept this premise is up to you. But it is true that there has never before been a non-medical industry doing so much to prevent illness as the JanSan industry, and for that we must all give ourselves a round of applause.
