ket segments move quicker than others in regard to these issues. When the day comes that my lack of cer-tification in regard to my operations, equip-ment, products, etc. is a road block, I will do whatʼs necessary. However, I believe the debate is when, how or if that will happen. Again, Iʼm sure it is [in] some places. But by and large, a BSC does not need their company or workers to be certified to be successful. Joseph Russell 9/26/2009 Certifications, additional training [and] edu-cation are all great assets for any BSC. Important: Yes. Necessary: No. I think when you start expounding on cer-tifications, the potential customer is won-dering about price. When it becomes necessary to the cus-tomer, then it will be necessary to this industry, of course. Right now, we hear a lot about certifica-tions being bought, fabricated, created from nothing and just plain fraudulent. How did disinfectants become “green” under EPA standards? It would appear that standards can be adjusted to include certain things. Certifications have to be trusted. Lynn Krafft 9/29/2009 I think there is a problem with believing that “certification for a building service contrac-tor (BSC) or an in-house service provider (ISP) validates that workers are proficient.” With the turnover in the industry, this is a huge leap of faith. I imagine that the service organization wishes that were actually the case and is happy if that is perceived by the client to be the case. In reality, many of our workers in janitori-al donʼt last long enough to become profi-cient, although we did have one recently who was quite proficient in using the clientʼs computer until she forgot to erase her chat room screen and we freed her to waste her time on her own time. Certification should never become a requirement for assuming competency unless accompanied by constant third-party monitoring. And, you know what that would cost. Cheyne Brokate 9/30/2009 The importance of a certification depends on the content, who is doing the certifying and what you plan to use it for. It can be worthless or it can be priceless.
