Unfortunately, the positives in reporting were scare in times of economic uncertain-ty, global conflicts and a U.S. recession. On The JanSan Front Hitting home, huge cleaning chemical and equipment companies reported record losses, shut down plants and issued mass layoffs. Professional cleaners, already maxed out, were asked to do much more with much less. However, also during this time period, the JanSan industry drastically advanced. We learned how to be wiser when approaching cleaning practices, frequen-cies and customer service problems. The industry also continues to produce the finest in green technology as well as science to advance and help validate the cleaning process and educate the public. Just this year alone, weʼve seen facility cleaning and maintenance needs rise on the list of priorities to deal with possible pandemics. In 2009, CM e-News Daily ™ covered a wide array of topics that influenced our industry. You should have learned a lot during the past few years. As one expert recently said to me, “This is not a recession, it is a correction.” Most of us know, for example, that a mop and bucket from 1967 is no longer adequate to do the job of effective, hygien-ic floor care. Our correction is to use todayʼs tools to keep up with the times and new customer demands of faster, better and cheaper. Building service contractors will have to be crafty to reach high price points, includ-ing offering add-on services. In-house cleaners will have to continue to invest in technology, maintain employee and management training and look for ways to maximize the budget. If youʼre waiting for the good old days of excess to come back, this recession might lead to depression for you. Move forward with better products and knowledge on your side. Letʼs all turn the page to prosperity in 2010.
