Something on top of many minds is con-trolling the spread of harmful germs and bacteria. Aside from cleaning surfaces of unsight-ly and unwanted soils and greases, reduc-ing the amount of harmful germs and bac-teria — and in some cases eliminating them, even if only temporary — is the pur-pose of cleaning. Being that this issue is our CM/Spotlight: Outbreak Control, I wanted to touch on a topic recently covered in our CM e-News Daily ™: The H1N1 influenza A (swine flu) virus. Here is what some of the 650 survey respondents had to say regarding how the threat of a looming pandemic has affected the ways they clean and maintain their facilities: We put hand sanitizers throughout the plant. We are concentrating on more cleaning of touch-type surfaces. Weʼve put posters up to promote washing of hands, covering coughs, etc. Through U.S. Government informa-tion, we have gone to a more thor-ough and more widespread deconta-mination style of cleaning. This is sold to customers on a case-by-case basis. We try to instill in our contacts the importance of a co-mingled effort with prevention along with common-sense practices to establish our com-pany as the knowledgeable provider of hand and door sanitizers We increased frequency of ceiling-to-floor cleanings from annually to quar-terly. Also, we installed alcohol-based hand sanitizer dispensers at all rest-rooms, mailrooms and conference rooms. We made alcohol-based hand sanitizer pump bottles available in all office suites. Box 25542, London, ON N6C 6B2 Educating The Industry The “H1N1 Special Report: Anticipating A Pandemic” was a two-day electronic newsletter dedicated to raising awareness of and eliciting a response to H1N1. Through timely news articles and in-depth editorial, we analyzed the latest reports from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO), cov-ered articles offering prevention tips and shared responses from individuals who answered our H1N1 survey. When asked, “Has H1N1 news made you change your cleaning focus?” 63 per-cent answered “yes.” A majority of respondents noted that they have increased the amount of time spent on prevention in an effort to avoid an outbreak altogether.
