The occasional news story is published that details how a custodian or someone of the like received an employee of the month, quarter or year award, but the majority of those in the industry are rarely heralded as dedicated. Like the late comedian Rodney Dangerfield famously said, “I don’t get no respect.” It is quite unfortunate that scores of indi-viduals fail to see the importance of com-petent, hardworking custodial and mainte-nance professionals. While I was pursuing my educational desires, I always greeted the custodial and maintenance workers I saw and often engaged in conversation with the friendly-faced ones. However, it was not until I began learning the intricacies of the JanSan industry that I truly gained respect and admiration for what these folks do on a daily basis. For the longest time, I took for grated the fact that classrooms were always clean, floors and hallways were shiny and free of debris and restrooms were pleasant-smelling and tidy — at least from an appearance perspective. These silent knights and unseen heroes are rarely thanked for their efforts and are generally the first people to blame when something goes awry. I realize I am preaching to the choir and you are likely reading this thinking, “You’re right; very few people understand what I do to keep the built environment clean, let alone have respect for my actions.” Well, sir or madam, I respect you and commend you for your thankless services. I understand that, without you, we would be learning, working and playing in filth. It is high time that the rest of the popu-lace champions for your collective recogni-tion and begins respecting the work you perform. One day, this will be accomplished by your continued diligence in cleaning and maintaining surfaces. Though I never looked down on JanSan professionals, my experiences have taught me that others do — and it is unwarranted. Eventually, everyone will have that “ah-ha” moment when they realize that custodi-al and maintenance professionals are not uneducated and lazy, but rather are com-petent and trained to ensure the cleanli-ness of facilities and the health of building occupants.
