2010 Revisited Managers Association International (BOMA) indicate that the commercial prop-erty management industry is largely uncon-cerned that bedbugs are a growing con-cern, according to a press release. Ninety percent of respondents — all BOMA members — said they are not even aware of a commercial real estate bedbug problem. Orkin Director of Technical Services Dr. Ron Harrison said: “It’s a common miscon-ception that bedbugs only affect places where people sleep — hotels, apartments, homes — but bedbugs are migrating into offices and other commercial spaces. Tenants can easily and unknowingly trans-port bedbugs from their home or travels to their workplace, where the bugs can infest practically any soft surface like chairs, rugs, sofas and even cubicle dividers.” September 24, 2010 — WALESKA, GA — Pest control crews were suited up as they moved in to clean up a dormitory at Reinhardt University after bedbugs were discovered, according to WGCL-TV. The university evacuated the dormitory, moving 71 male students to a nearby gym-nasium where cots were set up, the article noted. The university said that it was steam cleaning every mattress and every crevice in the 50-room dorm, though the bugs were only found in two rooms, the article stated. October 27, 2010 — BOULDER, CO — Bedbugs have seen a resurgence in the United States of late, and businesses and residents in Boulder report the pests have become a real problem over the past few months, according to the Daily Camera . Some businesses have seen a boon thanks to the rising infestations: “I would say our business is multiplying 10-fold right now,” said Reed Swenson, sales manager for Envirozone, a pest control service that battles bugs in the Denver metro area. Housekeeping employees at Boulder’s Outlook Hotel and Suites now have to watch a new “bedbug” video when being trained for their jobs; supervisors undergo a more lengthy training on how to scour a room for the tiny parasitic insects, the article stated. At the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless, bedbugs not only have taken time from the staff’s other duties, but they’ve taken money from the shelter’s annual budget, the article noted. “It’s an expense we didn’t really have two years ago, and it looks like it’s going to be ongoing. It’s not something you do once and forget about. You can eradicate a room today, but tomorrow someone might bring some more in,” said Boulder Shelter for the Homeless Executive Director Greg Harms.
