For four months in a row, snow and ice re-moval were the most searched phrases on our website, CMMOnline.com. Perhaps the severity of last year’s winter — and the large amounts of snow and ice it brought to much of the country — created this particular interest. Or, perhaps this is a yearly concern. Either way there is little doubt that the se-verity of last year’s winter weather took a lot of commercial facilities by surprise. Speaking from personal experience, many municipalities and buildings here in the Deep South were not prepared for a bout of extended winter weather. Equipment used for facility functions, as well as public safety equipment, was not available to help stranded motorists, work-ers and schoolchildren during a surprise snow and ice storm in January. “Slumber parties” became the norm in office buildings, retail locations and gas stations when the ice and snow seemed to suddenly cover roads. Provided here are operational tips, equip-ment ideas and facts about melters to in-form our readers on the best options in case of another long, bitter winter. In an extended A Clean Sweep profile, we also learn from the environmental services and facility managers at a children’s science museum in Birmingham, Alabama. Tasked with keeping the hands-on Mc-Wane Science Center clean during busy field-trip season and winter holidays, these managers and their environmental services team address a number of important clean-ing issues every day. From infection control options and IMAX theater cleaning to busy restroom upkeep, we discuss their cleaning prac-tices, as well as the challenges that open aquariums can create for a janitorial de-partment. Once again, thank you for reading, and here’s to a successful fall and winter for fa-cility managers and BSCs in all commercial buildings.
